What stands out to me the most, looking at this work now, is a reflection on the Japanese practice Shimenawa; binding sheaths of grass to create forms and archetypes. The nature of this process, where bound structures need renewal, intrigued me. This binding becomes a cosmogony for existence, a celebration of renewal and maintenance, a constant evolution that resonates with the impermanence of life. It evolves into the entire town or village taking part in this renewal process, transforming into a festival featuring these extraordinary structures. I found the story fascinating. When you see how this tradition has changed over millennia, it becomes an incredible process of maintenance, a ritualised practice.
